Pottery teapot created by Richard Phetheandem

Artists Statement

My work continually evolves, drawing on and gently subverting many aspects of pottery’s historical vessel making and decorative traditions, currently combining classical form and graphic imagery. I use coarse-grogged terracotta clays. Thrown elements are cut, altered and assembled, with additional rolled slabs and pressed handle details. Slip brushing with paper stencils and sgraffito is carried out on the leatherhard surface. After bisque, areas of plain clay are stained and pieces are selectively protected from glaze by wax resist. I use either transparent clear or honey glazes fired in an electric kiln to 1120ºC

Richard has been commissioned by A&C Black to write a book on throwing coming out soon. For our demo he will be demonstrating throwing and all aspects of his handbuilding techniques & slip decoration.
